In the laboratory experiment described, the influence of the vertical magnetic-field component on the properties of the magnetospheric boundary was studied, using collisionless supersonic plasma flows. Most of the data correlate well with modern concepts of the boundary's structure. On the other hand, the nature of the variation of the plasma parameters along satellite orbits justifies a new treatment which allows for certain effects on the dayside, observed in the laboratory experiment.
