The theoretical models that attempt to explain the luminosity cusp at the center of M87 by the existence of a supermassive black hole there are shown to be inherently contradictory. A dense kernel of stars inside the central core of the galaxy would fit the photometry better. Calculations are performed, with King's isothermal model generalized by introducing a nonzero radius to allow for the stellar kernel.
