The paper deals with a detailed comparison between the real magnetic field of the earth and the field expected for a general celestial body. The discussion focuses on assessing the possibility that the cosmological magnetic field may be a component of the total magnetic field of the earth. The discussion suggests that the cosmological field alone is not sufficient for a complete description of the earth's magnetism. Further, the explanation given by other theories - developed particularly for the earth's field and based substantially on the dynamo model - is incomplete in many respects. These two explanations are believed to complement each other, and only if taken together can they provide a satisfactory basis for the origin and behavior of the earth's magnetic field.
