The design of the three-stage Ariane launcher is discussed with reference to the thrust structure, the Viking 5 motor, propellant feed lines, and guidance instrumentation. Ariane performance is outlined noting operational flights and the parameters of normal ascent into a geosynchronous ellipse. The development and production of the Ariane project are considered in terms of funding, contractor selection, mock-ups, payload requirements, launch costs, and actual construction
