The paper examines the degree to which population gradients are weakened during the coalescence of two or more stellar systems using published simulations of mergers between galaxies. The experiment suggests that the center-to-edge population difference in a merger remnant will be 20% smaller than that in its progenitor galaxies if these are identical centrally concentrated systems. Because of changes in radial structure, population gradients are reduced more rapidly than suggested by this number; mixing is more efficient in mergers between less concentrated systems; in real merger remnants any weakening of gradients may often be masked by star-formation in residual interstellar gas.
