High-resolution 1.5- to 5-micron spectra of the Becklin-Neugebauer source in Orion exhibit both Brackett-alpha and Brackett-gamma emission localized within 1.4 arcsec of the continuum source as well as CO absorption arising in the obscuring molecular cloud. The data support the hypothesis that BN is a young B0 or B1 star surrounded by a compact H II region and an expanding dust envelope. The object is apparently driving massive supersonic expansion of the surrounding cloud material (the radio 'plateau' source) into OMC-1.
