GHOSTS is the largest HST survey to date of the resolved stellar populations in the outskirts of nearby disk-type galaxies. In hierarchical galaxy formation these outer regions are predominantly built up during the early accretion phase. As the stars in the halo have subsequently only undergone a passive evolution, they offer a direct record of the assembly history of the system. Taking observations of both the stellar halo and disk populations together thus provides important insights into understanding the formation and evolution of late-type galaxies. As the GHOSTS survey currently covers 16 galaxies it offers a unique perspective on the assembly of such systems across a broad range of galaxy masses, luminosities, inclinations and morphological types.
This talk will review the current status of the survey and highlight some of the recent results. In particular, I will discuss the structure of the stellar halos and their relation to the inner regions of the associated galaxy. I will also examine the phenomena of disk truncations and using a new analysis show that they imply stellar migration rates much greater than previously expected.
