Previous studies of the 'line profile variable B star' 53 Per are reviewed, and an attempt is made to report on observations of line-profile variations in this star. Attention is given to data acquisition and analysis, period selection and profile modeling, the choice of free parameters, photometric monitoring, and an attempted period analysis. It is securely concluded that: (1) large-amplitude line-profile variations in 53 Per can be easily explained by traveling waves associated with nonradial pulsation; (2) this star is a complex nonradial pulsator which exhibits at least five periods at different epochs; (3) the inclination must be larger than 45 deg; and (4) 53 Per is a good candidate for the presence of nonlinear effects if such effects are important in large-amplitude profile variables. The possibility is considered that Beta Cepheids may also be large-amplitude (i.e., nonlinear) nonradial pulsators.
