It was previously demonstrated that a visual surface-brightness parameter, FV, is tightly correlated with (V-R) color index. The application of this relationship to white dwarfs is investigated by analyzing BVRI photometry of nearly all white dwarfs brighter than 13th magnitude which have reliable parallaxes. Tests are performed to ascertain the accuracy of white-dwarf angular diameters inferred from values of FV. The test results show that such angular diameters are in excellent accord with those inferred from model-atmosphere analyses of flux distributions. A mean radius of approximately 0.0132 solar radius is derived for DA white dwarfs, masses of white dwarfs with measured gravitational redshifts are estimated, and the results are found to be unreasonable for any composition in the Hamada-Salpeter (1961) theory. However, a density in excellent agreement with the theory is computed for 40 Eri B by using parameters of the red-dwarf eclipsing binary CM Dra.
