The hypothesis that elements with atomic weights of at least 60 were produced mainly by neutron capture in stars is tested by comparing the observed abundances of isotopes of elements from cadmium through bismuth with the corresponding neutron-capture cross sections. It is found that if neutron capture did play a role in the production of these isotopes, it was not decisive. The possibility is investigated that the isotopes were formed by fission and beta decay of massive bunches of nuclear matter. The results suggest that beta decay, rather than neutron capture, played the main role in the production of the isotopes considered.
