Free-free absorption coefficients of the negative ions H2(-) and N2(-) are calculated using continuum wave-function data recently determined for e-H2 and e-N2 scattering. The target molecule is assumed to be in its equilibrium ground-state configuration during radiative transitions, and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation is adopted. The resulting absorption coefficients are given for a range of temperature and frequency, and are compared with the scaled absorption coefficients determined previously by various other workers. It is concluded that the H2(-) calculations are probably the most accurate available at the present time, the N2(-) results are less satisfactory, and momentum-loss data for N2(-) may be more reliable. The results are fitted to an analytical expression for convenience in model-atmosphere calculations.
