High-dispersion International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectrograms were obtained for eight bright early-type Be and shell stars. Indications for stellar winds were found in all program stars from asymmetric or violet-shifted ultraviolet resonance line profiles. The strongest wind velocities were observed for rho Car. The maximum velocities derived for rho Car from the violet edges of the C 4 and Si 4 resonance lines (-700 to -1100 km/sec) approximately corresponded to the wind velocity measured from the extension of the wings of emission in the H alpha line profiles found one year earlier (900 km/s). Emission appeared to be present only for part of the stars and only in the Fe2 and Mg2 resonance lines.
