Ammonia was identified in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter from the
observation of individual NH3 bands between 2000 and 2300 A, on a
International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) high resolution spectrum. The
shape of these NH3 bands implies that the ammonia distribution must be
strongly reduced by photolysis in the upper jovian atmosphere.
