The line profiles of compact emission formations on the sun are calculated. The results of the calculations can be used to analyze the emission of preflare emission nuclei, 'whiskers', and other formations which are observed on the sun both in emission and in absorption. The main results obtained in the work from data on optical flare emission agree well with Syrovatskii's theory of flare development. The total emission of a flare consists of the diffuse part of the emission line widths of 2-3 A) located at heights of 5000-20,000 km above the photosphere level and the emission of compact formations (line widths of 5-20 A) originating in the lower layers of the chromosphere. These formations are regions of new magnetic field floating up, regions of the most probable formation of current sheets. The study of compact 'subflare' formations can prove useful in the observation and study of current sheets.
