Analysis of the thermomagnetic instability of degenerate plasma shows that under certain conditions small perturbations in the temperature, density, and magnetic field can grow and drift upward to the surface of the star. Some of the thermal plasma energy may in the process be converted to magnetic field energy. The onset of instability will engender disordered motions in the degenerate core of the white dwarf.
