Measures of UK 1.2 m Schmidt telescope plates with the COSMOS automatic measuring machine are used to investigate the nature and clustering properties of blue objects near the plate limit (B less than 23) in a field at the south galactic pole. A red sample is also analyzed for comparison. The blue objects are found to comprise two distinct populations; the diffuse images together with the red sample form part of a galaxy population with a color distribution consistent with current predictions for high-redshift galaxies, and the clustering properties of these galaxies are similar to those found for brighter objects. The compact blue objects are classified as quasars, and the increase in surface density of these objects is consistent with values for brighter samples. The lack of clustering for these objects puts quite strong constraints on theories of quasar evolution.
