A total of 730 discrete dust clouds in M31 is identified and some of their characteristics are catalogued. In size, the dust clouds resemble the LMC sample, though they span a larger range, all the way from the resolution limit up to over 2 kpc. Both in size and in complexity of structure they are like the 'large dust complexes' of the Galaxy. The number density of clouds falls off steeply with radius, as nearly the inverse first power of the distance from the nucleus, measured in the plane of the galaxy. They virtually all lie within 50 arcmin of the center. Comparison with high-resolution H I maps shows surprisingly poor agreement. Although the dust and gas seem to agree in position in the NE and SE quadrants, they are almost anticorrelated in the other two quadrants. Furthermore, contrary to expectation, a rectified face-on map of the positions of the dust clouds shows no discernible spiral structure.
