Cygnus X-1 has been observed in different spectral states and orbital phases with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer(HETGS). Numerous absorption lines have been observed in the HETGS spectrum. The lines have been identified
with highly ionized material, including H-like, He-like and Li-like resonance lines from S, Si, Mg, Ne, Ni, Al and Fe; and several lower ionization lines of Fe by the earlier HETGS observations. The dramatic variability in absorption lines of Cygnus X-1 has been also reported. Here, we will discuss whether the variability of these absorption lines depends on the orbital phases and spectral states from the available
Chandra archive. The absorption lines are generally attributed to the absorption by stellar wind in the binary system. Therefore, the line variability in different spectral states and orbital phases may provide valuable diagnostics on the physical conditions of the wind.
