A method is developed for investigating the secular stability of contact binaries and applied to a system of 1.0 solar mass and 0.6 solar mass. The system is found to be unstable with an e-folding time of about 30,000 yr. The possible influence on this result of the form of the equation describing the energy transport between the two stars is investigated. It is however found that the instability occurs in all cases. The relevance of this result for the theory of W UMa stars is discussed.
