A study is presented of the existence and possible effects of a phase transition between nuclear and quark matter in the center of neutron stars. The model which investigates the interaction between quarks is a kind of linear approximation of quantum chromodynamics. It was found that: (1) no first order phase transition is possible between nuclear and quark matter at reasonable densities; however, it is energetically favorable for the system to be in the quark phase for energy densities greater than critical, which is strongly dependent on the 'free' quark mass, and (2) 'quark stars' of maximum mass equal to 1.44 solar mass are obtained in a special configuration.
