At a workshop held on May 28-30, 2008, in Pasadena, CA, invited speakers representing the broad scientific community spoke of exciting recent advances across all of astrophysics and outlined the role that FIR/SMM observations could play in astronomy and cosmology in the decade ahead. Subsequently we drafted a white paper that organizes and details these plans.
A draft of the white paper will be distributed both before and at the AAS meetings. The primary goal of this Special Session is to elicit discussion, answer questions and stimulate input from the audience on how the white paper may be improved before submission for consideration by the Decadal Review.
As an introduction to this session, I will outline the thrust and primary recommendations of the white paper as assembled to date. My talk will be followed by an explanation by George Helou of the mode in which the IFR/SMM community has historically worked. These two introductory presentations will be followed by audience participation through interaction with a Panel chaired by David Leisawitz.
