Charge coupled device characteristics and applications are reviewed. The structures described include bar linear arrays, interline transfer matrices, and pattern transfer matrices. The quality assurance attainable with charge coupled devices is discussed. It is shown that their choice leads to high performance, and reliable and compact implementations including low light levels in star tracking and space telescopes.
