The significance of the finding by Hirata et al. (1988) of a deficit of muonlike events in Kamiokande results is discussed. The most likely cause of the deficit is neutrino oscillation: the change in neutrino from one type to another en route from the source to the detector. Such behavior has consequences not only for elementary-particle physics but also for cosmology, for which the associated requirement of a finite mass for the neutrino raises the possibility of gravitationally closing the universe through the summed mass of all cosmic neutrinos left over from the Big Bang.
