A calculation based on the intensity profile of elliptical galaxies
illustrates why the D(n) parameter introduced by Dressler et al. (1987)
can replace the two parameters luminosity and surface brightness in
their improved Faber-Jackson (1976) type relation. Limits on the
applicability of their (and similar) parameter(s) are discussed.
