Issues related to the identification and origin-determination of the narrow absorption lines of quasars, the active cores of extremely luminous galaxies, are reviewed. It is pointed out that the identification of cloud characteristics (including dimension, temperature, and gas ionization state) can help determine whether the narrow absorption-line spectra have their origin in the gaseous clouds ejected by the quasar itself or in other line-of-sight objects such as galactic halos or intergalactic clouds. Application of the study of narrow absorption lines to the present understanding of large-scale structure in the universe is also discussed.
