The north equatorial belt of Jupiter carries long-lived dark blue-grey
patches on its south edge, and is often interrupted internally by
outbreaks of small white spots ("rifts"). Observations over the past 14
years show that the rifts often cause sudden intensification or
disruption of the dark patches as they pass.
