Tidal observations and a numerical model locate the resonant period of the Bay of Fundy at a value lying between 12.5 and 12.7 h, close to that of the tidal component N2 (12.66 h), which is created by monthly variations in the distance of the Moon. The nodal modulations of the major tidal component M2 (12.42 h), which alter its amplitude by ±4% over a span of 19 years, do influence the frictional characteristics of the system which in turn affect the resonant period. A large M2 shifts this period closer to that of N2: this is reflected by modulations in N2 which are synchronous with those of M2. In contrast S2 (12 h), away from resonance, is reduced by an increased M2 and vice versa.
