Scientific paper
It is shown that the long-term photometric variation of Pleione comprises variations in the envelope and in the another very opaque region. These two components behave differently, implying different origins. The weakening of the Balmer photospheric lines and their recovery are traced in phase with photometric variation in the opaque region. This suggests that the opaque region is an extended photosphere. In the activity cycle of Pleione, this extended photosphere is first formed, then the envelope develops in the background of rapid formation and subsequent gradual decay of the extended photosphere. The photometric variation of the extended photosphere can be described in terms of a gravity darkening effect in equatorial rotational acceleration. We also examined two other late-type Be stars, 88 Her and kappa Dra, and reached the same conclusion.
