This paper focuses on hierarchical clustering and examines classes of models for the intracluster plasma (ICP) production, early or late. From these elements the z-dependent luminosity functions and their integrals, the counts and the redshift distributions are computed and compared with the existing data mainly from the surveys by HEAO 1 and 2. If counts with slope as steep as, or steeper than, the 'Euclidean' model will be found, then a considerable component of the ICP must be primordial and the chemical history of the number galaxies has to be reconsidered. If the preliminary evidence of flat counts are confirmed, several consequences follow, notably: the rich clusters constitute a young and antievolving population; injection or infall over 70 percent ICP began not earlier than z about 3. A high efficiency of star formation at previous epochs is implied, and subsequently slow rates of astration and ICP injection, or gradual infall continuing to the present.
