Optical polarization along and across the jet of M 87 was mapped at 1.5 arcsec effective resolution in the R band. For the first time, the optical polarization structure can be followed all the way from 2 to 26 arcsec from the core. Values of 24.2 + or - 0.3 percent at knot A (the brightest knot), 22.1 + or - 1.0 percent at knot D (the innermost knot) and a maximum of 41 + or - 3 percent at a distance of 22 from the nucleus were obtained. On a global scale, the magnetic field in the synchrotron region exhibits a highly ordered pattern: it is aligned with the jet except at knots A and C where it stands perpendicular to the jet axis. In addition, the data reveal positional mismatches of polarization and brightness. The polarization peaks corresponding to knots D and F are shifted by about 1 arcsec downstream. At knot F and close to knot B, a significant gradient of polarization is found across the jet.
