A characterization of Ly-alpha systems which posits a decrease of density profile with radius proceeds on the concept that the observed distribution of H I column densities may substantially reflect the density distribution within Ly-alpha systems, rather than a variation in global system properties. The distribution generated by randomly-oriented thin disks with various surface-density laws is discussed; in general, a power-law distribution of column densities over many decades is obtainable from approximately a decade in radii. Some implications of clumpiness in the system's gas are noted.
