The development of laser frequency-control techniques for precision measurements is reviewed. Passive-stabilization experiments are noted and highly stabilized helium-neon and carbon dioxide lasers and CW dye lasers are described. Superstable dye lasers are considered with reference to tuning and suppressing long-term drift. The wavelength read-out problem is addressed noting the sigma-meter and lambda-meter techniques. The application of Doppler-free two-photon transitions to Rydberg levels is discussed for ultrahigh-resolution spectroscopy. Relativity experiments with stabilized lasers are identified, including the relativistic time dilation experiments, large-scale spatial anisotropy, and measurements of the Michelson-Morley type.
