The ESO Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (EFOSC) was used on February 1st and 2nd, 1987 at the 3.6 m telescope on La Silla to obtain images and spectra of the SN 1986O in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 2227. From the CCD exposure through a V filter the authors derive a magnitude of 16.03; and Hα exposure is used to identify the H II regions in the galaxy. The spectra cover the spectral range 4000 - 7800 Å at a resolving power of 1900.Both the magnitude and the spectral features are consistent with the classification of the SN as a type Ia about 45 days past maximum light. Strong interstellar lines of Na I are detected at the velocity of NGC 2227. This feature, common to other three recent type I supernovae, suggests that their progenitors might belong to a disc population.
