The stars within 4-5 kpc of the sun have systematic motions (in addition to differential galactic rotation) whose spatial structure conforms to a double-armed spiral with a pitch angle of 7.5 deg; the rotational velocity of the spiral pattern is 21.4 km/sec per kpc. The deviations in the galactic potential and density associated with the spiral velocity field are calculated, as well as the effective projected density of the component of the Galaxy responsible for this structure (30.9 solar masses/sq pc). The estimates obtained agree with the model parameters calculated by Marochnik et al. (1972) from density-wave theory.
