After a brief introduction indicating the nature of developments in cosmology since about 1965, the paper gives a sketch of the history of modern cosmology from its birth 70 years ago up to the year 1965. The intention is to supply the general background to other communications dealing with particular chapters in the history of cosmology in Britain during the period since World War II.
