In the post-war period there has been considerable interest in securing wider fields of good imaging in astronomical telescopes. Various proposals were made, in earlier years, for correcting or reducing the oblique aberrations, mainly coma, that limited the useful field size of reflecting telescopes, but none of these was seriously pursued. Three of these earlier studies formed the basis for post-war developments.
