A comprehensive summary of the problems of the geochemistry of sedimentary carbonates and the work done on them would fill a volume of many hundreds of pages, and the accompanying bibliography would probably run into thousands of items. In the following article, therefore, no claim of completeness is made for the treatment of any of these problems. Rather, an attempt has been made to review briefly the aspects of the most significant problems of the geochemistry of sedimentary rocks that are not covered by the other papers of the Symposium. In general, each one is treated in the following manner: 1. (1) Significant contributions and ideas are outlined and the pertinent literature cited, especially recent summarizing papers. 2. (2) The current status of each problem is discussed. Where there are discrepancies in data or disagreement about processes an attempt is made to present all points of view. 3. (3) For most of the areas discussed some meaningful unsolved problems are mentioned, and 4. (4) Possible approaches or methods of attack are suggested for some of these problems.
