An instability criterion is proposed for magnetoacoustic waves in a
plasma in front of a cosmic-ray-modified shock, i.e., a shock affected
by cosmic-ray pressure. The results are important for the assessment of
the effect of cosmic rays on plasma dynamics in interstellar space.
