It is suggested that all comets originated about 5.5 million years ago when a large (90 earth mass) planet in an orbit between Mars and Jupiter broke up. Direct calculation permits prediction of the distribution of the orbital elements of objects moving on long-period ellipses which might have originated during breakup, and it is found that the comet orbits have the predicted distribution in every case where a measure is possible. In particular, some of the distribution anomalies, such as a bias in the directions of perihelion passage, are statistically strong. Compositional similarities among comets, asteroids, and meteorites are noted, and the significance of the young cosmic-ray exposure ages of meteorites is examined. The possibility that tektites originated as a result of the planetary breakup is considered.
