A linear polarization map of the L1551-IRS5 jet in the R waveband is presented. The jet appears to be formed by a series of emission-line knots which are polarized to varying degrees. At the apex of the jet, where a "new" knot has recently appeared, the level of polarization is 11.8 per cent oriented perpendicular to the jet axis. The level of polarization then decreases monotonically along the axis of the jet and becomes zero at the position of the bright knot 7 arcsec west of IRS5. A polarized intensity image of the jet is dominated by a stellar-like knot at the apex. The jet polarizations are assumed to arise from selective extinction by magnetically aligned grains in the small-scale disc surrounding IRS5.
