Reticon spectroscopy and BVRIc photometry are presented for the first time for the short-period binary system CX Virginis, which displays an EB-type light curve. The analysis of these data for masses, radii and luminosities shows that the system is composed of an evolved F5 primary component and an evolved early K-type secondary component whose properties resemble those displayed by the Binnendijk A-type W UMa systems. Both components appear to fill their respective Roche lobes. The distribution of surface brightness over the facing hemisphere of the secondary component is anomalously enhanced by some mechanisms perhaps to do with energy transfer from the primary to the secondary component.
