Two models, a three-dimensional slender incompressible torus with constant angular momentum and a two-dimensionally incompressible slender annulus with an arbitrary angular momentum profile, are used to study the effect of self-gravity on the Papaloizou-Pringle (PP) instability in shearing accretion tori. Self-gravity is found to inhibit PP instability in both cases. With increasing strength of self-gravity, the parameter range over which the principal branch of the PP instability occurs shrinks until the instability disappears, following which an overstable and an unstable mode appear.
