A relativistic approach to the propagation of nonlinear waves in elastic solids can be useful in investigating the seismology of compact (i.e., neutron) stars. The paper develops a method for studying the covariant version of one-dimensional nonlinear relativistic motions in elastic bodies. Particular attention is given to the cases of infinitely small longitudinal waves, longitudinal shock waves, weak shocks in isotropic solids, and compression shocks in neo-Hooke materials.
