An analysis of the equations for determining the precessional rotation and the elements of the relative orientation of coordinate systems shows that these effects are inseparable. The unknown, delta e, earlier interpreted as the motion of the equinox, can be explained by the different orientations of the coordinate systems to which the observations of two epochs are referred. The following methods are promising for the determination of the precessional rotation independently of the effect of the relative orientation: the dynamical method and the methods of observations of extragalactic objects and of practically fixed stars.
