A scheme is proposed for the evolution of a star which culminates in the formation of a planetary nebula and a white dwarf. The stages of this evolution include: a main sequence star of 1-4 solar masses; a red giant of high luminosity with excess carbon content; a compact infrared source; an extended infrared envelope also emitting at the H2, CO, and OH lines; the appearance of emission lines in the spectrum; a bright compact region of ionized hydrogen, with the observation of several infrared and molecular lines; a young bright compact planetary nebula; parallel formation of a hot ultraviolet star and a normal planetary nebula; and formation of the white dwarf.
