In this contribution I review several of the most interesting recent developments in the field of globular cluster research. The sensitivity and resolution of modern observational facilities in combination with recent advances in computational modelling are rapidly revolutionizing our understanding of clusters in the local Universe, with many important implications. On the observational front, large surveys are uncovering more and more new objects, while deep high-precision measurements are revealing previously unsuspected complexities in Galactic globular clusters. Computationally, the advent of special-purpose hardware and ever-more sophisticated codes has heralded the rise of realistic globular cluster N-body simulations. We are now, for the first time, in a position to confront superb observational data with the results of direct and highly detailed numerical modelling.
