Spectrophotometric observations of VV Puppis, a polarized AM Hercules-type binary, are reported, and a modified magnetic-pole accretion model of the system is described. A great change occurred between March 24, 1977 and April 12, 1977 by which time the source had made a transition to a state of steady low luminosity which lacked the strong hydrogen and helium emission lines of March. Broad-band circular polarimetry measurements obtained in December 1977 provide additional information on the inactive state. VV Pup differs from AM Her in having (1) an eclipse-like light curve with more than half the period spent near minimum light, and (2) states of steady low light level. It is suggested that the emission behavior can be explained in terms of small accretion columns at the poles of an oblique dipole; these columns would rotate in and out of view like sunspots.
