In many pulsars the subpulses drift systematically across the emission window. it is shown that, within the framework of the polar cap model, it can be expected that the drift paths in a pulse number-longitude diagram will have a tangent form. Their observed repetition rate (P3), separation (P2), and drift rate at the central longitude enable both the number of circulating sparks and the observer's line-of-sight inclination to the magnetic axis to be determined. The recent claim of Krishnamohan that his observations of PSR 0031-07 are incompatible with the polar cap model is shown to be incorrect. Interpreted in terms of this model, the observations suggest that four equally-spaced sparks are circulating the magnetic pole at a uniform rate.
