Solid SO2 spectra (6-10 microns), formed under a variety of deposition temperatures and deposition rates, are presented in order to define the conditions at which the infrared spectral character changes and thereby limit the range of possible environments under which it could form within the atmosphere of Io. A double-beam modification of the negative-flux technique (Stepanov, 1961) is used in the experimental procedure. Results are presented for a series of spectra, formed at 80 K, but with various rates of formation; and for a second series at a fast deposition rate and at temperature intervals of 10 K between 80 and 140. Present results are discussed with respect to measurements of other studies and to other interpretations. It is concluded that the suggestion that absorption by solid SO2 is a plausible way to reconcile Voyager infrared interferometer-spectrometer observations of Io with models of gas phase absorption by SO2.
