The mechanisms of cosmic ray acceleration by shock waves are examined in light of the recent observational data on gamma-ray sources. The discussion focuses on general effects of particle energy loss on cosmic ray acceleration, characteristics of discrete hard gamma-ray sources, cosmic ray acceleration by stellar winds in clouds, and gamma-ray sources produced by supernova explosions within the clouds.
